State Studienkolleg in Germany: Admission, the Entrance Test and Why Public Beats Private

State Studienkolleg in Germany

A state Studienkolleg is a public preparatory college attached to a German university or university of applied sciences. For most Indian Class 12 students it is the route into a German public bachelor’s degree: one year of German-taught subject courses ending in the Feststellungsprüfung, with no tuition beyond a semester contribution. Admission is by an entrance test, the Aufnahmeprüfung, which tests German and mathematics, and the test is the part most students underestimate. This page covers who needs a Studienkolleg, how admission to a state one works, what the test is, and why a public Studienkolleg is the right choice for a student aiming at a public university.

Who needs a Studienkolleg

An Indian Class 12 certificate gives only conditional access to German universities. Unless you qualify for direct entry through a JEE Advanced result accepted by the university or one completed year of an Indian bachelor’s degree (see can Class 12 students skip Studienkolleg), you take the Studienkolleg route: a course in the subject group of your intended degree (T for technical and engineering, W for economics and business, M for medicine and life sciences, G for humanities and social sciences, S for languages), then the Feststellungsprüfung, which gives the entrance qualification for universities in that subject group.

From winter semester 2026/27, APS India applies a minimum of 70% in Class 12 to Studienkolleg and direct-entry applications; see the APS certificate guide.

State versus private Studienkolleg

State Studienkollegs are run by the federal states, attached to public universities, and charge no tuition, only the semester contribution. Their Feststellungsprüfung is the standard one recognised across Germany. Private Studienkollegs charge fees that can run to several thousand euros a semester, admit with lower German (often A2), and prepare students for the state examination externally, or for a private one accepted by fewer universities.

For a student whose aim is a public university, the state Studienkolleg is the obvious choice: no fees, the standard examination, and the university’s own international office handling the admission. The private route exists for students who cannot reach the German level in time or cannot get a place; it does not solve the cost problem the public route is meant to solve, which is why we do not recommend it by default.

Admission to a state Studienkolleg

  1. German at B1, with B2 in practice. Most state Studienkollegs require a B1 certificate (Goethe, telc, ÖSD, TestDaF, or an equivalent, sometimes with proof of 400 or more lessons) to apply; several, including those at KIT, TU Berlin, TU Darmstadt and Hamburg, require B2. Whatever the formal minimum, the entrance test is set at B1-plus to B2, and the classes run at B2 to C1.
  2. Apply to the university, not the Studienkolleg. Applications go through the university’s international office, sometimes via uni-assist, with the APS certificate, the Class 12 documents, the language certificate and the standard forms. The Studienkolleg itself does not take applications.
  3. Deadlines are earlier than you think. The common pattern is 15 July for the winter semester and 15 January for summer, but many Studienkollegs set their own, months earlier (Kassel’s winter 2026/27 deadline was 1 June, with the test on 13 June). In Hessen all Studienkollegs test on the same day, so you cannot sit several.
  4. Sit the Aufnahmeprüfung. You are invited to the test after the application is accepted, in Germany, which means a visa for the test or the language-course route; see the digital visa application.
  5. If you fail, you can retake at the next cycle, typically after six months, and many students use the gap for a German course in Germany.

The entrance test: what students underestimate

The Aufnahmeprüfung is a German test and a mathematics test, with a subject paper (physics, chemistry or economics) at some Studienkollegs depending on the course. The German paper, reading, writing, grammar and sometimes listening, is set above the B1 most applicants arrive with. The mathematics paper is at German Abitur level, which is further from the Indian Class 12 syllabus in style than students expect: fewer formulas to recall, more problems to set up and argue. Students who prepared only for the language, or only for the subject, fail the other paper.

Our advice is the one we give to every Studienkolleg applicant: do not arrive at B1 if the test is at B2, and do not treat the mathematics paper as revision. The six months before the test are for both, and the students who clear it on the first attempt are the ones who were already working at B2 and had practised German-style mathematics problems.

After admission

The year runs two semesters, taught in German, ending in the Feststellungsprüfung. The FSP grade is combined with your Class 12 result to form the grade universities use for admission. The route to the bachelor’s then runs through normal university admission in the subject group. Costs are the semester contribution, living expenses and the €11,904 blocked account for the visa; see Germany’s tuition-free education for what is and isn’t free, and the pathway from Class 12 to Studienkolleg for the full timeline.

FAQ

Next steps

Check your Class 12 against the 70% rule, get your German to B2 before the test, and apply to the university’s international office well ahead of its own deadline. The Study in Germany page covers the route end to end.

What is the difference between a state and a private Studienkolleg?

A state Studienkolleg is public, attached to a university, charges no tuition, and runs the standard Feststellungsprüfung. A private one charges fees, admits with lower German, and prepares for the examination externally. For a public-university goal, the state route is the right one.

What German level do I need for a state Studienkolleg?

B1 to apply at most, B2 at some; the entrance test is set at B1-plus to B2 and the classes run at B2 to C1. Prepare to B2.

What is tested in the Studienkolleg entrance exam?

German (reading, writing, grammar, sometimes listening) and mathematics at German Abitur level, with a subject paper at some Studienkollegs depending on the course.

When are the Studienkolleg application deadlines?

Commonly 15 July for winter and 15 January for summer, but many set their own, often months earlier. Check the specific Studienkolleg’s page; several close in May or June for the winter intake.
