F-1 Visa Slots for Spring 2027: When They Open and How to Use the Wait

F1 Visa Slots Spring 2026
AI Summary

For the Spring 2027 intake, with programmes starting in January, F-1 interview slots in India open mainly between September and November 2026, released in irregular batches rather than on a date. Since 2025 every first-time F-1 applicant must attend an in-person interview, must apply in India if that is where they live, and must have a complete DS-160 with social-media handles listed before booking. The practical question is not only when slots open but what you do between booking and the interview, because that is where the second attempt is won or lost.

When Spring 2027 slots open

There is no published release date. The pattern at the Indian posts is that bulk slots for a January start appear from September, with smaller batches through October and November, often at irregular hours. Cancellations free individual dates at any time. The State Department’s visa appointment wait-time tool is the official reference and updates regularly; third-party trackers show what has opened recently but are not official.

Two things make the 2026–27 cycle tighter than earlier ones. In-person interviews are mandatory for all F-1 applicants since 2 September 2025, including renewals, which removed the interview-waiver cases from the queue. And the vetting changes introduced in December 2025 slowed appointment releases into 2026, so Spring 2027 applicants are sharing the calendar with Fall 2026 admits who could not get a date in time.

How booking works for Spring 2027

  1. Get the I-20 from your university and pay the SEVIS I-901 fee.
  2. Complete and submit the DS-160, including every social-media handle used in the past five years, before you book. The DS-160 guide covers the fields that matter.
  3. Create or update your profile on the US visa appointment system for India and pay the visa fee.
  4. Book two appointments: biometrics at a Visa Application Centre, then the consular interview. Both are needed; the VAC visit comes first.
  5. Choose the post among Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata by availability and by what suits you; which consulate is best for an F-1 visa covers the trade-offs. Applying outside India is no longer an option unless you live abroad; see applying for a US student visa from a third country.
  6. Expedited appointments exist for documented urgency, but only after you hold a regular appointment date.

If you were refused for Fall 2026

A refusal under 214(b) does not block a new application for Spring 2027. Most students in this position reapply as soon as slots open, and that is where the pattern repeats: book, wait, show up, give a slightly better interview, and get the same answer. The refusal slots page covers the booking mechanics for reapplicants.

What to do with the wait

Students planning a January start tend to think of the sequence as: get the slot, then prepare, then interview. The slot is the easy part. The weeks between booking and the interview are the time to understand your own case, and that is what most first-time refusals never did.

The first attempt was usually casual: an application treated like a college form, an interview treated like a conversation. The F-1 interview is neither. The officer has to be convinced, in two minutes, that you are a genuine student with a specific plan, funded, with reasons to return. That is not something you can improvise on the day, and it is not something another attempt fixes by itself.

So use the wait for three things:

  • Reread your DS-160 as the officer will. The free-text fields, your duties, any previous refusal, are what gets read. If they are thin or casual, fix them before the interview, with a new DS-160 if needed.
  • See your profile from the officer’s side. Why this university, why this programme, how it follows from what you have done, how it is paid for, and what you do with it at home. If any answer is vague to you, it will be vague to the officer.
  • Treat it as the serious interview it is, not a college admission or a job interview. The F-1 interview questions guide and the interview rule changes cover what has changed.

If you have been refused before, the guide to getting a visa after 214(b) is where to start; the slot can wait a week while you do that work.

FAQ

Next steps

Submit the DS-160 properly, book the VAC and interview as soon as a date appears, then spend the wait on the case rather than the calendar. The Fall 2027 slots page covers the next intake; the Study in USA page covers the whole route.

When do F-1 visa slots for Spring 2027 open in India?

Mainly from September 2026, in irregular batches through October and November, with cancellations freeing dates at any time. There is no fixed release date; the State Department’s wait-time tool is the official source.

Do I need an in-person interview for a Spring 2027 F-1 visa?

Yes. Since 2 September 2025 in-person interviews are required for all F-1 applicants, including renewals.

Can I book my Spring 2027 interview in another country?

Only if you live there. Since 6 September 2025 applicants must interview in their country of nationality or residence.

I was refused for Fall 2026. Can I apply for Spring 2027?
